P.R.K. (Photo Refractive Keratectomy)

P.R.K. (Photo Refractive Keratectomy) is a procedure that utilizes laser technology to correct refractive errors by removing tissue from the surface of the cornea.

The laser beam reshapes the cornea, allowing images to be focused on the retina.

PRK is a 4-Step Procedure

First, an anesthetic eye drop is given to numb the eye and a circle marker is gently touched to the eye.

Second, the doctor will remove the top layer of the cornea called the epithelium.

Third, the doctor then aims a cool (Excimer) laser beam, with precise control, onto the surface of the cornea. The laser beam flattens the surface of the cornea, correcting the patient's vision. In most cases, the area affected is only microns thick (less than the thickness of a human hair). The entire procedure is done by laser with no incision or sutures required.

Lastly, a protective contact lens is placed on the cornea to assist in healing. Within a few days the surface cells (epithelium) will regenerate and the cornea will be back to normal. Vision is usually clear within a few days to a week of the procedure.
